Whether you're too sick to travel, or an airline cancels yoiur flight, there's One thing to know for sure! Find out what your travel insurance covers when it comes to cancellations. We understand that travel is unpredictable and that's why we have comprehensive cancellation cover you can count on. Keep reading to understand what we cover when it comes to flight cancellations, family emergencies, delays and more. 

How much am i covered for?

When purchasing your policy, you select the appropriate amount of cancellation cover for your needs. The amount you choose should cover the costs of all prepaid expenses for all travellers listed on your certificate of insurance. 

The amount of cancellation cover for the policy you have selected will be shown on your certificate of insurance and will be on a per policy basis (not on a per traveller basis).

What's Covered?
  • Pre Departure Cancellation & Amendments. We will reimburse cancellation fees and lost deposits including travel agent's cancellation fee for your unused travel and accommodation arrangements for which you have paid in advance, associated with those named on your certificate of insurance only, that you cannot recover in any other way if you cannot travel due to: injury, illness; strike, riot, hijack, civil protest or unrest, weather, natural disaster, or accident affecting your mode of transport, or a wedding, funeral, or prepaid conference, concert, music festival, or sporting event that you were scheduled to attend was cancelled and was the sole purpose of your trip. 
  • Alternative Transport expenses. We will pay Your Reasonable additional travel expenses to reach a wedding, funeral, prepaid conference, sporting event, concert, music festival or prepaid tour lasting more than 2 consecutive nights on time if Your scheduled Overseas transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted and that means You would not arrive on time.
  • Family Emergency. If you need to return home unexpectedly due to a family emergency we will reimburse the Reasonable additional cost of Your early return Home at the fare class at which You had planned to travel. In order to have this cover, the family member must be under aged 84, reside in Australia or New Zealand and you must not have been aware of the likelihood of the hopsitalisation or death prior to travel. If the hospitalisation is as a result of a pre-existing medical condition, the maximum we will pay is $2,000 per adult.
  • Additional Accommodation & Travel Expenses. Cover is provided if your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted because of one of the following events: strike, riot, hijack, civil unrest, weather, natural disaster or accident affecting Your mode of transport. We also cover you if you become sick or injured and are unfit to travel.
  • Travel Delay Expenses. We will reimburse up to $200 for reasonable additional meal and accommodation expenses if your pre-paid scheduled transport is cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled for a reason outside of your control, your journey has commenced, and you are delayed for at least 6 hours; and up to $200 for each full 24-hour period that the disruption continues beyond the initial 6-hour delay. 
  • On Trip Disruption. We will reimburse cancellation fees and lost deposits including travel agent's cancellation fee for your unused travel and accommodation arrangements for which you have paid in advance, associated with those named on your certificate of insurance only, that you cannot recover in any other way if you cannot travel due to: injury, illness; strike, riot, hijack, civil protest or unrest, weather, natural disaster, or accident affecting your mode of transport; you lose your passport, travel documents, or transaction cards or they are stolen, or your home is rendered uninhabitable by earthquake, explosion, fire, or flood.

what's not covered?
  • Delays or cancellations you already knew about. You will not be covered for Cancellations if You were aware of any reason that may cause Your Journey to be cancelled, disrupted or delayed.
  • Delays or cancellations made by your transport service provider. We do not cover for cancellation, delays or rescheduling which are at fault by an airline, shipping line, bus line or rail authority as the responsibility falls on the transport provider to supply you with the services you have paid them for.
  • Connecting transport. If you miss the connecting flight/transport where the stopover, layover or connection originally schedule on your itinerary was less than 4 hours. 
  • Financial collapse.  Cover is not provided if you claim because of the financial collapse of an airline, travel agency, tour operator or accommodation provider. Or for a claim when your tour operator or wholesaler is unable to complete your booking because there were not enough people to go on the tour.
  • Act or threat of terrorism. Your claim arises directly orindirectly from an act or threat of terrorism

Cancellation FAQs

  • Am I covered if my flight is cancelled by rescheduling or maintenance by the airline? 
  • For fault of the airline such as schedule changes, aircraft maintenance or staffing issues, any refunds or re-arrangement of flights is the responsibility of the airline. We provide cover for unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, natural disaster, strikes, collisions or if you become sick or injured and are unfit to travel. Please see the PDS for full details. 

  • Can I claim for the hotel cost if my outbound flight is delayed?
  • If your flight is delayed for more than 6 hours and you are unable to return home for the delayed period the Travel Delay Expenses benefits provides cover for reasonable costs for meals & accommodation up to  $200 for the initial 6 hour period with an additional $200 for each additional 24 hour period that the disruption continues.

    Please note that you will need to claim through your an airline first and show us documentation that they are not able to reimburse you for any associated costs due to a flight cancellation. Please see the PDS for full details on Travel Delay Expenses benefits.

  • Can I claim if I miss my connecting flight?  
  • It depends on the reason that you miss your connecting flight. Travel Insurance will cover you if you miss your connecting flight due unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, natural disaster, strikes, collisions or if you become sick or injured and are unfit to travel. We do not cover for missed connecting flight that were fault of the airline as it is their responsibility to provide you with the service you have paid for. If you miss a connecting flight we recommend seeking compensation from your transport provider. 

  • If my flight is cancelled, can I book with another airline and claim?
  • It depends on the reason your flight was cancelled. If you decide to book with another airline because of your original flight was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such a strike, riot, hijack, civil unrest, weather, natural disaster then you may be entitled to claim. We always advise you to contact us first before paying out any additional travel expenses.
