Travelling within Australia? 1Cover's Domestic travel insurance covers you for things like trip cancellation, rental car excess, losing your luggage and family emergencies, but it doesn’t cover medical expenses while you holiday at home.
If you're hiring a car, it can also provide cover for the rental insurance excess which in most cases is far cheaper than you'll find at the depot. Plus, if you're doing adventures sports, skiing or cruising domestically you can add extras to your policy to cover those.
If something goes wrong with your domestic rental car, you won't be stung with an expensive excess from the rental car company.
Just because it’s a domestic holiday, it doesn’t mean it’s cheap. Cancellation cover can help if you need to change your plans.
Things can still get lost when you’re travelling in Australia. That’s why we cover luggage and personal effects.
Your journey could be delayed by events outside of your control like weather, or bushfires. Our domestic cover includes additional accommodation and meal expenses.
For full details on what our policies cover, see our travel insurance coverage page.
When you hire a car in Australia, if your rental vehicle is involved in an accident, is damaged, or is stolen, you could be liable to pay thousands of dollars for the rental car excess charged by your hire car company.

Covers all eligible age drivers on your rental vehicle agreement and you can reduce your excess to $0.

Domestic travel insurance is for Australian residents that provides cover for trips taken within Australia.
1Cover considers trips that are only 100km from your home a holiday. Not all insurers do so beware.
There are risks wherever you travel - even on domestic trips. Incidents can easily happen in Byron or Bali, whether it's lost luggage or a delayed flight, or an unforeseen emergency at home means you can no longer travel. Domestic travel insurance is just as vital for holidays at home as well as trips overseas to help protect you from unexpected events outside of your control.
Even if you are only cruising withing Australia waters, you need travel insurance, as Medicare will not cover you when you are out at sea. You must purchase our Cruise Pack add-on with your policy, selecting 'Australia Cruise' for your region.
This will ensure you are covered for emergency medical assistance and emergency medical and hospital cover, cancellations, missed departure and more. See our Cruise Travel Insurance page for more information.
Rental vehicle excess benefit does not take the place of Rental Vehicle insurance. However, if your Rental Vehicle is involved in an accident while you are driving, or is damaged or stolen while in your custody, you have provision to claim for a reimbursement for the excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay under your Rental Vehicle hiring agreement. Limits apply, check the PDS for details.
If you take frequent Domestic Trips, you might want to consider a Frequent Traveller Policy. This is a convenient way to save time and potentially money, if you travel regularly around Australia. Find out more about Annual or Frequent Traveller policies.
While you are in Australia, we are unable to cover any domestic medical expenses. As a travel insurer, we can't take the place of health insurance. There is legislation in place to prevent this. If you are an Australian permanent resident or citizen, you will likely have access to Medicare or your private health insurance.
Depending on the type of policy you buy, most domestic travel insurance plans for Australia cover for things such as lost or damaged luggage and travel documents, rental vehicle insurance excess, additional expenses, amendment or cancellation costs, but they do not cover medical benefits because of the Australian health care system Medicare.
1Cover offers overseas medical coverage if you test positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) and require medical treatment while overseas, but we do not cover you medically when travelling domestically. See our Covid hub for full information.
If you are travelling in Australian waters on a cruise liner you will need to purchase our Cruise Pack add-on with your policy, selecting 'Australia Cruise' for your region.
