Solo female travel is soaring: here's what you need to know

31/10/2023 - Media Release

New research shows a growing preference for solo travel among Aussies, with women taking the lead.

According to a survey run by 1Cover Travel Insurance a whopping 65% of Aussie women said they were interested in or intending to travel solo. Those aged 25-34 said they regularly travelled solo (54%), followed by women aged 35-44 (14%).

63% of those surveyed also said that solo travel allowed for ‘greater freedom and flexibility’ while more than a third (35%) said they believed a solo trip ‘could be more enjoyable’ than travelling with others.

Solo female travel has experienced an upsurge in recent years according to major travel companies. Flight Centre has reported that more than half of those booking solo trips overseas in the past 12 months have been women, while travel aggregator Kayak revealed a 36% increase in solo trips in 2023.

Natalie Smith, spokesperson for 1Cover Travel Insurance says,

“Like many travel companies, our data reflects a growing trend towards solo female travel.  Whether through backpacking expeditions, wellness journeys or novel cultural experiences, women are choosing to explore the world independently and they are certainly not waiting for a partner to join them on their adventures.”

Smith notes that the growth of female solo travel has also highlighted the importance of travel insurance.

“At 1Cover, we’re committed to safeguarding our customers regardless of gender, age, or destination, however when you travel solo, travel insurance is even more invaluable.”

Smith says that while solo travel invites spontaneity, travellers should take precaution and plan for the unexpected.

“Travel insurance can be your lifeline in a crisis, particularly if you’re on your own. Should you need help, travel insurers have dedicated emergency support teams trained to assist you through all manner of overseas emergencies no matter where you are in the world.”

Smith also notes that costly inconveniences like lost belongings and flight cancellations should also be accounted for.

“While medical cover should be a top priority, a misplaced suitcase or a weather-related delay can add significant expense and hassle to your holiday. In many instances travel insurance will provide cover for those circumstances and more.”

Lastly Smith says that travellers should buy cover well in advance of their travels.

“It’s never been easier to plan a last-minute adventure, however, if you’re travelling on your own, take the time to ensure you’re covered. Always buy insurance once you’ve booked your flights, as you never know what might happen in the interim. Notify your travel insurer of any updates or changes to your itinerary and contact them as soon as possible if you need to make any claims.”
