Travelling with a pre-existing illness can be stressful, but having travel insurance that will cover you if things start to go off track can take away some of that stress. 1Cover will insure a whole host of pre-existing illnesses, but if yours is not on our list of 35 conditions that are automatically covered you’ll have to fill out a medical assessment form. Here’s a handy ‘how to’ guide on doing just that to make your travel insurance journey as smooth as possible.
On our home page head straight to the quote box at the top of the page and let us know about your trip. We’ll need to know your destination, travel dates, and the ages of each traveller. Hit the ‘Get a Quote’ button to move to the next step.
The next page will give you your options for cover with 1Cover. The number of available policy options, the benefits and prices vary based on your trip specifics, the above quote is based on a 30 year old going to Fiji for 11 days so will not be reflective of everyone’s trips.
Choose the policy you want by clicking the ‘Next Step’ button.
Customise your coverage by adding any extras you may need for your trip. If you’re heading on a cruise, doing some winter sports or renting a car on your trip you’ll need to add on cover for these activities. You also have the option here to reduce your excess to minimise out-of-pocket expenses if something goes wrong.
This is your chance to see your premium and trip details with all the extras added. Once you’ve checked these details hit ‘Next Step’ and on we go.
This bit is pretty self-explanatory, we just need the basic details, like name, email and phone number, for all travellers that are included on the policy. Fill these out and scroll down to the ‘Pre-Existing Medical Conditions’ section to continue.
Assuming you do have a pre-existing medical condition, select ‘Yes’. If you are unsure if you do have a pre-existing condition read the definition at the included link.
Make sure you check the list of automatically covered conditions, and if any one of your conditions is not on the ‘Automatically Covered’ list hit the ‘NO’ button and proceed to assessment.
Answer three questions truthfully, by selecting ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ as they may affect your eligibility for insurance coverage or introduce exclusions to your policy.
After answering these questions, accept the ‘Privacy Statement’ by ticking the box, select which travellers have conditions to declare and hit ‘Start Assessment’ to proceed.’
Type your condition into the box shown and hit ‘Search’. We’ve used Diabetes as an example. You’ll be shown a list of relevant options, as shown below. Press ‘Select’ on the correct option for you.
You’ll be given some questions to assess your condition, answer these and then press continue. You’ll be brought back to the screen shown in step 10 to add any additional conditions, go through steps 10 and 11 in the exact same way.
You’ll see a list of all your conditions you’ve declared and once you’re happy press ‘Finish’. The next screen will either show this, if your conditions exclude you from travel insurance:
or the details of the additional premium to cover your pre-existing condition:
From here go to ‘Proceed to Payment’ and provide your details as usual.
Remember, honesty is crucial throughout this process. Providing accurate information ensures you'll be covered in case of any incidents during your trip. Dishonesty may render your policy ineffective. Time for happy (and safe) travels!
